A Constable attached to the Mahawilachchiya Police Station was injured and admitted to the Mahawilachchiya Hospital and later transferred to the Anuradhapura hospital when an explosive device (Ali Wedi) he used to drive away a herd of wild elephants exploded in his right hand on December 17 morning.
He was identified as Constable Jayasuriya 68953 attached to the Mahawilachchiya Police Administration unit. He was among a police team deployed to drive away a herd of wild elephants which invaded Randuwa Village situated close to the police station in the wee hours of Saturday.
