The fire that nearly damaged public property around the Kurunegala Railway Station area was brought under control by the fire brigade this afternoon.
Tar barrels stocked alongside the road by Road Development Authority (RDA) officials who were engaged in renovating the road had caught fire and ignited quickly.
There were fears the fire would not be contained in time, but the Kurunegala City Council fire brigade contained the fire quite easily.
