Illegal private pharmacy raided

A team of Food and Drug Inspectors attached to the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has detected a stock of drugs worth around Rs. 1 million ‘including drugs used for impotency’ from an illegal private pharmacy located at Wolfendhal Street, Colombo, NMRA Chief Food and Drug Inspector Amith Perera said.

According to Perera, there were drugs used for diabetes, high blood pressure etc. There were antibiotics and vitamin tablets among the drugs detected at the pharmacy. The owner had a legal (authorized) private pharmacy at another location and he had closed it down and brought the drugs to the raided premises.

“The new location did not have a license. The drugs had been stored under a temperature of 33 degrees without air conditioning. The woman who was issuing drugs did not have any qualification or knowledge on drugs. The authorized pharmacist was not in the pharmacy,” he said.
