A person who posed as a Public Health Inspector (PHI) and took bribes from restaurateurs was arrested in Nuwara Eliya yesterday (27).
The suspect, a resident of Bogawana Estate in Bogawantalawa had ‘raided’ several restaurants under the pretext of being a PHI officer inspecting them.
He had then taken bribes from the restaurateurs promising to conceal the fact of their unhygienic conditions and promising to save them from legal action.
While Rs. 7,000 was found in the possession of the suspect at the time of his arrest, it is reported that he had demanded as much as Rs. 25, 000 for concealing their wrongdoing.
CCTV footage of the suspect inspecting several of the restaurants is in the possession of the Police.
Hatton Acting Magistrate, S. Rajendran has ordered the suspect remanded till January 3.
