Messages to mark Milad-un-Nabi

Prophet’s teachings emphasise peace and harmony: President

I am pleased to send this message of greetings on the occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi, the historical moment of the birth of Prophet Mohammad, President Maithripala Sirisena states in a message to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohamed.

The message: “This is an occasion for the people to draw attention to the teachings of the Prophet that lays emphasis on peace and harmony, which is the foundation for national unity and coexistence that reflects highly among multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic societies here in Sri Lanka. The Prophet’s own treatment with his bitterest enemies was the noblest example for his followers. At the conquest of Mecca, he stood at the zenith of his power.

He proclaimed: “I trample under my feet all distinctions between man and man, all hatred between man and man.’

The principles of universal brotherhood and doctrine of the equality of mankind which he proclaimed represents one very great contribution of Prophet Mohammad to the social uplift of humanity.

Recovering after 30 years of ethnic strife, we are, now progressing in the path of democracy and good governance.

We have initiated a reconciliation process to ensure peace and harmony among the people in accordance with the teachings of Prophet Mohammed as well as all other religious leaders.

Tolerance, mutual understanding as well as cooperation among each and every religious group will contribute to uplift the Sri Lankan nation as a developed country.

To speed up our progress towards this goal, Meelad-un-Nabi celebration will provide us an excellent opportunity as it is an occasion for strengthening peace and community harmony.

Wish you all a happy Meelad-un-Nabi festival!"

Prophet’s preaching inspires Muslims and others: PM

Prophet Mohamed, recognised as the last Prophet of Islam, practiced a religious path of peace and encouraged his adherents to do the same, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe states in a message to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohamed.

The message: "Followers of Islam believe that until he was called to serve God at the age of 40, he lived a life of piety and dignity.

He brought peace and unity to Medina, torn apart by tribal warfare and dissention, encouraging his people to pursue peace and fellowship, engaging in a path of giving and selfless commitment towards others.

The celebration of the Holy Prophet’s birthday is therefore an occasion to recall the spirit of peace and harmony with which the Prophet preached for 23 years. Today, it inspires Muslims and others towards living the kind of lives that honour Islam’s principles of communion and love towards fellow mankind. Let me take this occasion to wish all Muslims a peace filled Milad-un-Nabi."

Holy Prophet throughout his life practiced what he preached: Sampanthan

On the auspicious occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, I would like to extend my heartiest greetings and good wishes to the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, Opposition Leader and Tamil National Alliance leader R. Sampanthan states in a message to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohamed.

The message: "Milad-un-Nabi is an important day in the Islamic calendar.

It is a day where Muslims all over the world celebrate the birthday of Holy Prophet Mohamed. The basic teachings of Prophet Mohamed to the whole world is to foster peace and harmony among all people.

Prophet Mohamed epitomised unity and brotherhood in his life, and he taught the importance of compassion, tolerance and equality.

The Holy Prophet throughout his life practiced what he preached and he espoused an ordinary and simple life. In his teachings, he never failed to emphasise the values of truth and justice in a society and the importance of building a disciplined community of people. Prophet Mohamed’s profound teachings are vital in building and fostering reconciliation and unity among different communities.

My wish therefore, is that we as people in Sri Lanka, would take these valuable teachings and apply them to our context to build a better country for our future generations. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to convey greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters celebrating Milad-un-Nabi."

Prophet remains the beacon of hope and redemption to all: Fowzie

It is my great privilege to send this message on this year's birthday celebrations of Prophet Muhammad, Meelad-un-Nabi also known as Barawafat or 12 Rabi-ul-Awal or Mawlid is the day that commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad which occurs on 12th day of Rabi Al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims all over the world remember this day with reverence and great fondness, National Integration and Reconciliation State Minister A.H.M. Fowzie states in message to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohamed.

The message: "The Holy Prophet has been characterised as the Insaan-e-Kamil, or the perfect human being in the creation of Allah.

The Prophet is the perfect example to all human beings.

His sayings and actions (Hadith) along with the messages of Al Quran remains as the supreme guide for humanity.

At no time in history the message of Meelad-un-Nabi is more relevant than in the contemporary era when great destruction of people and property are taking place in the name of religion(s).

In today's tumultuous world, one seeks redress in the examples for peace and reconciliation practiced by the Prophet.

Despite the virulent propaganda carried out by outsiders about the nature of Islam and the intentions of its followers, the Prophet remains as the beacon of hope and redemption to all humanity.

Besides being compassionate, he never intended harm and ill will towards the people who refused to accept his message. The misguided people of Arabia waged war on him not once, but many a times.

The non-Arabs tried to sander him and belittle his teachings. In spite of opposition and confrontations in propaganda and war, the Prophet followed decency and conciliation in dealing with his enemies. The famous Hudaibbiyah Agreement is the best example to this.

The victorious Arab Muslim army when successfully entered the holy city of Mecca, the Pact laid down rules of conduct for safety and security of the people of Mecca.

Thus the Prophet set the rules of engagement with compassion and love which should be the hallmark in any conflict ridden world. The celebrations of the Prophet's birthday are carried out not just merely to elevate his own glory, but more as a reminder to us to be good Muslims and citizens of Sri Lanka.

I urge my fellow Muslims in this blessed land to be patient, considerate and compassionate to our fellow citizens and not engage in meaningless recriminations.

Let this year's Prophet's birthday celebrations remind us again our obligations towards God, our beloved country and people of Sri Lanka.

President Maithripala Sirisena has taken constructive measures to end discord among different communities and to carry forward the country to attain lasting peace and prosperity among all communities so that we can be proud partners to the Nation's success.

Let's pray to Allah to make our aspirations a reality."
