Northern Province Fishermen Union representatives said they will resort to stern action against the government if any changes are made to their demands under the Indian government's influence.
Addressing the media yesterday at the Jaffna Media Centre, the Jaffna Fishermen Union representatives said the scheduled dates of the ministerial level talks between India and Sri Lanka to iron out the fishermen's long standing issues were changed from December 2 to today (29) and tomorrow (30). The venue also was changed to Delhi. The fishermen union said the sudden change of the date and the venue has caused fear among the Sri Lankan fishermen.
They alleged that the meeting was scheduled to be held in Colombo on January 2 and the sudden change can be due to the pressure exerted to the Sri Lankan government by the Indian government.
They said the issue has been dragging on without any result.
They added the government should not make any changes to the demands by the northern fishermen union.
