The proposal by the Labour and Trade Union Relations Minister W.D.J Seneviratne to adopt and implement the national policy on elimination of child labour in Sri Lanka, was approved by the cabinet of Ministers.
Sri Lanka agreed to eliminate child labour at Global Child Labour Conference in 2010 held in Hague, Netherland. Meanwhile, there has been a decrease of 50 percent in use of child labour from 2008/2009 to 2015/2016 indicating Sri Lanka’s ability of eliminating child labour.
The national policy on elimination of child labour in Sri Lanka is also essential in regaining the GSP plus from the European Union.
