We demand General Election - Ratnayake

“We are demanding a general election to ascertain the opinion of the people since they elected the 225 parliamentarians,” Posts and Telecommunication Minister C. B. Ratnayake said.

He was speaking after a protest rally held at Ragala concurrent to the launch of ‘one million-signature campaign’ demanding a General Election on November 25.

He said the opposition led by the UNP was now talking of a majority in Parliament. Even if they showed 150 members on their side, Mahinda Rajapaksa would continue as Prime Minister undeterred.

He said that since Mahinda Rajapaksa had been appointed Prime Minister and a Cabinet was appointed, whatever Karu Jayasuriya said did not matter.

He said he could not understand why Ranil Wickremesinghe is staying at Temple Trees without leaving it and going to courts to prove his case.

The Minister said the Mahinda Rajapaksa government had already started providing relief to the people. “Fuel prices were decreased and a packet of fertilizer which cost Rs. 3,500 was reduced to Rs. 1,500. “Could anyone oppose such relief?” he asked.
