Prime Minister at Kandy

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has extended his gratitude to the Chief Prelates of Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters for securing the Constitution and sovereignty of the people during the recent political upheaval in the country.
PM Wickremesinghe said that he has ensured Mahanayake Theros that Buddhism will be given the foremost place in all future activities.
“We have discussed with the Opposition and have informed the Chief Prelates that Article 9 of the Constitution, which emphasizes on giving the foremost place to Buddhism, will not be subjected to any changes, when bringing amendments to the Constitution or when drafting a new Constitution.”
PM Wickremesinghe made these observations while addressing the media following his visit to Dhalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic) in Kandy and Chief Prelates of Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters today morning.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also said that the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police has been informed regarding taking strict actions against the persons in connection with the recent incident in which Buddha statues in Mawanella area were destroyed.
“Strict actions will be taken against these persons who have destroyed some Budhha statues. We have already informed both Police and the CID to inquire into this matter. Some of the persons who are involved in the incident have already been taken into custody. There is another incident where a Hindu Kovil has also been attacked. Strict actions will be taken against persons who are involved in all these violations.” PM Wickremesinghe further said.
PM Wickremesinghe also said that he has informed Mahanayaka Theros of the future development plan that would be followed by the government. “I informed them that our economic development activities will be focusing on rural areas and village level during the coming period of time.” he added.
