Explosives found from Jaffna

A large stock of explosives including detonators and other bombs suspected to be of the LTTE were located underground in Amban of Wadamarachchi East in Jaffna on Tuesday.

According to the police, the stock of explosives was found at the time when a resident was digging a well in Amban.

Residents had found four 81 millimeter bombs, 54 motor bombs, six pressure bombs and 62 anti-personnel mines.

The stock was recovered with the help of personnel attached to the Special Task Force after residents informed of the incident to the officers attached to the Jaffna Police Station.

According to a senior official of the Jaffna Police, the stock had been buried for 20 years. The condition of the stock had become rusty and several bombs were not in good condition.

However, he said it does not affect the function of the explosives.

Jaffna Police and the Special Task Force will take steps to destroy the explosives after obtaining a court order from the Magistrate’s Courts.
