A person who transported sand illegally from Deduru Oya by a tipper was taken into custody by Chilaw Police.
Chilaw Magistrate Manjula Rathnayake fined the suspect two million rupees and imposed a jail term of one year.
The suspect was W. Ruwan Rohan, a resident of Chilaw. He had been fined nine times previously for the same offence.
The suspect had disregarded the court orders banning sand mining and illegal transport of sand from Deduru Oya as it has caused severe environment pollution to the whole area. Chilaw Police prosecuted.
