Opposition making baseless allegations - Lokuge

The Opposition raises various unnecessary concerns about the Government’s pandemic management and its policy on organic fertilizers because it has no other shortcomings to criticize, Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge said yesterday (28).

Minister Lokuge pointed out the Government is successfully managing the pandemic under the guidance of health authorities.

Lokuge made these observations at a press briefing held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna headquarters in Battaramulla yesterday (28) morning.

Minister Lokuge observed, “Today, every country in the world is facing various problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sri Lanka is also facing the same situation. We as a Government are working to minimise these difficulties. Steps are being taken to provide vaccines to all Sri Lankans. Initially, the Opposition alleged that the vaccines were not brought. Then they alleged that the vaccines are not properly distributed. The President, the Ministry of Health and other agencies are fighting the pandemic under the guidance of the health sector.”

“Then the Opposition started to criticise the Government’s policy on organic fertilizer. The Opposition and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna hold demonstrations against the policy. The main problem we have is COVID-19. We need to save this country from the pandemic. That is why the country has been under travel restrictions for days. Even under the lockdown, the Government took steps to properly implement the vaccination programme,” Minister Lokuge observed.

He further said, “The problem the Opposition has is that there is nothing much to criticise about. Public servants are paid on time. The Government provides the Rs.5,000 allowance to all Samurdhi recipients and others in need. So, the Opposition has only a very limited number of issues to protest about. We would like to request the public to think deeply about these allegations and keep supporting us to successfully carry out the pandemic management process.”
