Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Dr. Shilpak Ambule and Northern Province Governor Dr. Suren Raghavan inaugurated two school buildings in Navatkuli and Chavakachcheri, in Jaffna, yesterday.

The buildings were constructed with the assistance of the Indian Government for the Navatkuli Maha Vidyalam and Drieberg College. This was carried out as a part of a new project to provide buildings to 27 schools in the Northern Province, at a cost of Rs.250 million.

Ten such school buildings have been completed and inaugurated, including the two buildings that were opened yesterday.

The Deputy High Commissioner urged youths to seize the opportunities that were before them. Youths have the responsibility to take the nation forward to a befitting place in the comity of nations, he added.

Aside from the numerous projects undertaken for rehabilitation and resettlement, the Government of India has constructed 46,000 houses in the region. The 1990 Emergency Ambulance Service is operational in eight provinces, including the North.

The ongoing development projects in the Northern Province under Indian Government’s grant assistance include; the construction of a cultural centre in Jaffna, construction of 3,000 rainwater harvesting units, construction of 25 model villages consisting 600 houses, and establishing a business/ICT incubator centre in Jaffna.

The Deputy High Commissioner also visited the construction site of the Jaffna Cultural Centre and reviewed its progress. Being built at a cost of around USD 12 million, the centre is expected to be completed by mid-2019.
