Ten accused of mischief, damage acquitted

Panadura Additional Magistrate Kalhari Liyanage acquitted 10 accused including Kalutara District Parliamentarian, Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) Deputy Leader on Thursday concluding the 12-year-old case of mischief and damage.

Jayantha Samaraweera alias Samaraweerarchchige Jayantha Jayasiri Rodrigo, his father Samaraweerarchchige Gunadasa Rodrigo, Angerge Sunny Perera, Angerge Rasika Pradeep Perera, Angerge Sirisena Perera alias Saranelis, M. D. P. Kalhara Perera, H. K. N. Prabath Chandralal, K. Ariyawansa Perera, Madderge Maithriraj and A. J. M. Sumithra Abeykoon were charged by the Wadduwa Police for assembling unlawfully and forcibly entering the Morontuduwa Estate of Dona Karunalatha Thantirige of Mahaviharapara on March 28 or 30, 2006 and damaging the plantation and a parapet wall thereby incurring a loss of Rs. 50,000 to the owner.

The Additional Magistrate stated that according to the evidence of the witnesses the charges against the accused had not been proved beyond reasonable doubt and therefore acquitted the 10 accused.

Sub Inspector Sudath from the Wadduwa Police Crime Branch appeared for the prosecution.

Counsel M. D. Wijepala appeared for the accused.
