PM’s ‘burqa’ story totally false - PM’s office

The Prime Minister’s office yesterday said a story being circulated that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe objected to a proposal made by a group of ministers to ban the ‘burqa’, a garment covering the whole body used by Muslim women, was totally false.

The story has attempted to impose the notion that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe opposes bringing rules for banning the burqa.

In a statement to the media, the Prime Minister’s office said that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had stated that since the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), has proposed to ban the ‘burqa’, the Minister of Justice also should discuss with the ACJU and draft the necessary legislation.
