Financial grants given in support of NDF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa by various parties had not been utilized properly for the election campaign, the head of the main election operations office of the New Democratic Front (NDF) Tissa Attanayake claims.
A media release by Attanayaka alleges that the provision of funds for the election campaign had been done by a committee headed by former Minister Malik Samarawickrama and not by his election operation office situated at Vauxhall Street, Colombo.
Attanayake stated this in response to a previous media pronouncement by the United National Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam on November 20.
Attanayake, a former UNP General Secretary himself, had issued a press release in order “to reveal the truth to the public with regard to the election campaign and the operational activities”. “The finger has been pointed towards the Vauxhall Street election operation office to deliberately hide the truth from the public and supporters,” he added.
The media release said a main operational committee comprising the UNP Leader and the General Secretary had been appointed to run the election.
But, even the district managers of the party had been convened and instructed on the programme only after a request made by Attanayake.
“Therefore, issuing press releases in such an irresponsible manner at this moment is not suitable to the position of the General Secretary,” Attanayaka said and quoted the saying “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan”.
