Polonnaruwa Acting Magistrate Sandya Karunasekera remanded a bus driver and conductor until December 27 for endangering the lives of passengers by driving through floodwaters, yesterday. The bus, which was plying between Maduruoya and Colombo, had been swept away by currents between Manampitiya and Gallella on the Polonnaruwa – Batticaloa main road.
Fifty-four passengers had been in the vehicle at the time.
Security forces, police, and onlookers had come to the aid of the passengers when the incident had occurred.
Polonnaruwa Police had then apprehended the bus driver and conductor.
The former is a resident of Polwatte Gedara, Polonnaruwa; while the latter is from Matale.
