Champika arrested fast, so must be bond scam suspects - UNP MP

UNP MP Wijepala Hettiarachchi asked President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to take swift action to nab the bond scam suspects in the same manner the arrest of former Minister Champika Ranawaka was made.

He was addressing a media briefing at Sirikotha on Tuesday.

He further expressed his displeasure as the opposition on the prorogation of the parliament for six weeks instead of two weeks.

“We cannot accept the prorogation for 45 days. We request the President to convene parliament as soon as possible. We also insist to implement the same law that was implemented on former minister Ranawaka to the bond scam suspects. According to the final reports of the commission, the culprits in the Easter bomb attacks must be taken before court,” he said.

Parliament is the only place for the opposition to raise their voice and criticise the negative aspects of the government. Prorogation hinders democracy and the opposition. We express our displeasure in this regard, he added. “The government gave many promises to the public before the election. The rising prices of the essential goods in this festive season ridicule all those promises. When we came into power the, we raised the salaries of state sector employees. The government reduced some taxes and now covering the loss by dragging the public into difficulty,” Hettiarachchi said.

“We reduced fuel prices from Rs. 33; the prices of essential goods were lowered. We did a great service in our time. The public is facing now difficulties in the festive season. We will obtain a majority in Parliament in the upcoming general election and set up a strong government, he said.
