Liquor shops across the country will be closed on December 25 in view of the Christmas holiday, the Excise Department said.
Speaking to the Daily News the Excise Department Deputy Commissioner Kapila Kumarasinghe said that this decision had been taken based on the request made by the Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
Accordingly, all liquor sales would be banned from the time of closure of taverns on 24th to the time of opening of these liquor outlets on December 26th at five star hotels and other restaurants, hotels etc will also be banned as a result of this decision.
Therefore, the public are requested to inform the Excise Department making use of this hotline No 1913 to eradicate the menace of illegal liquor trade in the country during Christmas season.
