Twenty five years after the release of the first “Bad Boys,” the hit Will Smith-Martin Lawrence franchise returns to the big screen. But in this sequel, “Bad Boys for Life,” popular reggaeton star Nicky Jam gets in on the action in his first real role in a Hollywood blockbuster.
“I’m one of the villains of the movie. My name is Zway-Lo. There’s a backstory with Burnett - Martin Lawrence - who was my coach in school. But I took the wrong path and it turns out I’m now one of the worst ‘Bad Boys’ in Miami,” Nicky Jam says with a laugh, during an interview promoting the movie.
The opportunity to join the action-comedy came up in 2018, when the artist performed the official song “Live It Up,” for the FIFA World Cup in Russia with Will Smith.
“He told me they were going to do ‘Bad Boys’ and I told him that I would love to be in it. He was surprised that I was interested in acting and he told me, ‘if you get past the casting, the role is yours. So, I went to the casting in Los Angeles and it all worked out,” he recalls.
The chart-topping singer-songwriter, considered to be one of the architects of the Latino urban music movement, admits to being bit by the acting bug and wants to pursue a career in Hollywood films as well.
“I always liked acting. When I made the movie with Vin Diesel [“XXX: Return of Xander Cage”] it was like a cameo for a couple of minutes and I said wow, I enjoyed it. But when I made the series about my life for Netflix, where I played myself, I was the protagonist. That’s when I thought, this is something that I enjoy and really want to do. I took advantage and learned everything I could during the almost five-six months recording the series. And when I was given the opportunity to do ‘Bad Boys,’ I was ready,” states the artist, whose real name is Nick Rivera Caminero. Forbes
