Galle Additional Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana remanded a married couple for attacking and attempting to kill their seven-year daughter until February 13.
The daughter is from the father’s first marriage, police said in court.
They had tied her hands with a rope and poured hot water on her, police said.
Gonanawala Siri Pathiranage Mathis Prasanna (34) and Kalu Appu Hennadilage Ranjula Aanuradga (24) of Gonanwala, Imaduwa, Galle were remanded in this regard.
Police told court that the first wife had left her husband and subsequently, the suspect had married for the second.
Later the suspect had gone to the first wife’s residence and forcibly brought the daughter to his place. The first wife had called frequently demanding her daughter. He has asked her to come to the Imaduwa Junction to hand over the daughter last Friday (31), police further told court.
On the day, she had come in a three-wheeler to take her daughter and had fainted seeing the critical condition of her daughter. Consequently the mother and the daughter had been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and Imdauwa Police had recorded a statement of the mother.
Following the investigations based on the mother’s statement, the police had arrested the suspects and produced them before the magistrate.
Police told court that the girl’s medical examination said that several cut and burnt injuries were detected on her body.
