School students were left standard yesterday as the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) resorted to countrywide trade union action. Many students did not attend schools while those who attended did not have any classes to follow. The work stoppage was concerning demands including a request to do away with teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies.

Some schools were totally abandoned while some teachers carried out academic activities despite the trade union action.

Meanwhile, the CTU announced yesterday that they plan to launch a five day strike from March 16, considering that their issues regarding school principals have not yet being properly addressed.

The CTU has also stated that they have decided to refrain from performing additional responsibilities from today (27).

The strikers yesterday held a demonstration opposite Isurupaya which lasted for three hours.

The CTU alleged that neither the Education Minister nor any Education Ministry officials show any interest in carrying out discussions with the strikers.
