Protest opposite UGC: 22 undergrads remanded

The 22 university students arrested for protesting opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) were remanded until today (02). The order was issued by the Colombo Additional Magistrate when the group of students were produced before the court.

Twenty-two university students including two monks were arrested for protesting opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) violating a court order obtained by the Police over acts of obstruction of the public.

The Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) commenced a Satyagraha opposite the UGC on Thursday (February 27) demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna.

The Police had warned the students to leave the area immediately as their protest was a disturbance to the public.

“They were issued a warning that if they continued to protest in the area, legal action would be taken against them,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana when he arrived at the scene on Saturday.

IUSF Convener Ven.Ratkarawwe Jinaratana Thera has also been arrested along with the students.
