The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Agriculture Minister Chamal Rajapaksa to import 2,500 dairy cows from Australia.
Co-cabinet spokesman, Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said they intend to make Sri Lanka self sufficient in milk by 2025.
Speaking at the weekly cabinet media briefing yesterday at the Government Information Department, Dr. Pathirana said the government expects to save around Rs. 50 billion in foreign exchange annually spent to import powdered milk.
“With the importation of these milch cows, the country would be able to increase the daily dairy production up to 100,000 litres per day,” the Minister said.
