Constitutional amendments vital - Dr. Godahewa

The former government initiated the 19th Amendment to the Constitution not for the betterment of the country but to fulfill their political needs, Gampaha district SLPP candidate Dr. Nalaka Godahewa said.

The 19th Amendment to the Constitution must be abolished and that does not mean all the content included in it must be rejected, he said. He said this while addressing a press conference in Kandy yesterday.

Dr. Nalaka Godahewa further stated that it is important to make a full study of the factors that led to amendments in the present constitution and to prepare a timely constitution while preserving the useful factors of the 19th Amendment and move towards a 20th amendment. And he also added that if the SLPP receives a two third majority, a constitutional Amendment can be expected..

Dr.Godahewa visited the the Chief Incumbent of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven.Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Thera and the Ven.Wimaladhamma Thera of the Malwathu chapter and presented his programme to develop the Gampaha district.

“We expect a two thirds majority from the people as we cannot expect support from the Opposition when we look back at the way they reacted during the past few years” he said.

Moreover he added that citizens are content about the eight months led by President Gotabhaya Rajapakse and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who was engaged in politics for a long time. Therefore those who did not vote SLPP in the Presidential election will also vote SLPP in the General Election. He also added that SLPP would muster more votes as the opposition is divided and disliked by the people.Godahewa said the main culprit of the Bond Scam and those who were exposed in front of the country are in the Opposition and they expect the law to be enforced on them. He said that the second wave of corona had occurred in several countries of the world and if it did occur in Sri Lanka, it would be possible to control it successfully under the current leadership.
