Erosion in the coastal areas in the Ninthavur Divisional Secretariat Division In the Ampara District has become a major issue for the people of the area since they depend on fishing and coconuts.
The stretch from Ninthavur to Addappalam has been eroded over the past few months.
The fishing camps of the fishermen, boats and other gear have been damaged in the erosion.
The fishermen said that they have no place to anchor boats. Over 100 acres of coconut land have been uprooted by erosion, they said.
They said that the Oluvil fishing harbour construction has intensified sea erosion.
