Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) leader Ananda Sangaree has sent a letter to the Prime Minister requesting that steps be taken to release the Tamil prisoners being held for alleged political reasons.
He has urged the Prime Minister to release them under a general amnesty.
Sangaree has said in a letter that if it was justifiable to release the LTTE cadres who had been imprisoned for more than a year and rehabilitated those who had been imprisoned for more than 10 years can be released on an amnesty.
The former Parliamentarian said that granting amnesty is not new to Sri Lanka.
The TULF leader has requested the Prime Minister to consider the plight of the families of Tamil political prisoners and grant them a general amnesty.
