Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake stated that most of the citizens in the Colombo Metropolitan area have not yet received the Rs.5000 allowance. She said that currently, the allowance had been given only to groups with special needs.
Mayoress Senanayake urged the Government to provide the allowance of Rs. 5000, which is provided through the Divisional Secretaries. She added that the allowance could be provided through the Rural Committees to expedite the process and urged the Government to provide it in an impartial and non-partisan manner.
She addressed the media after distributing 115,000 bags of dry rations to low-income families and families who lost their livelihood due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the Colombo Municipal Area.
“About 60% of the people in the City of Colombo live on a daily wage. People have lost their livelihoods by now. I intervened and stopped several projects that were to be carried out through the Municipal Council and provided dry food bags to 115,000 families to alleviate the people’s hunger,” she said.
Moreover, she said that measures were taken to provide 10,000 food parcels a day to the people affected by the floods. Steps have also been taken to provide public assistance to 13,000 families through the Public Aid Department.
