Several other Taliban fighters along with some senior commanders are now trapped in Panjshir fighting for their lives. In Baghlan, the Taliban have fled to Kabul leaving more than 30 armed vehicles, landmines and weapons. Earlier, the Taliban said hundreds of their fighters were headed to the Panjshir Valley.

Ahmed Masooud and Amrullah Saleh, who are leading the resistance, have said they want to hold talks with the radical Islamist group.

Massoud also said that he and his supporters wanted a peaceful solution and were ready to negotiate an inclusive government with the Taliban, but the group declined the offer.

“If the Taliban try to seize control of Panjshir valley, resistance fighters will be ready to resist, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, one of the main leaders of Afghanistan’s anti-Soviet resistance in the 1980s,” Ahmad Massoud told Al Arabiya.

As per the Taliban’s Alemarah Twitter feed, hundreds of fighters were heading towards Panjshir “after local state officials refused to hand it over peacefully.” The video shared by the said handle showed a column of captured trucks with the white Taliban’s flags moving along a highway.

According to a Reuters report, there was some uncertainty about whether the Taliban have begun their operation. An offensive had been launched on Panjshir but one of Massoud’s aides said there were no signs that the column had actually entered the narrow pass into the valley and there had been no reports of fighting, the report quoted a source as saying.

“The resistance for the moment is just verbal because the Taliban have not yet tried to enter the Panjshir. The Taliban only need to lock down the Panjshir, they don’t even have to go in there,” Dorronsoro told news agency AFP. “The Taliban surround Panjshir from all sides and I don’t think Massoud’s son can resist much more than a couple of months. For the moment, he does not have any really strong support,” Abdul Sayed, an independent researcher, told AFP.
