PM Modi directs MEA to brief floor leaders on Afghanistan crisis

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) to brief floor leaders of political parties in view of development in Afghanistan, S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister, said in a tweet. The further details of the matter will be announced by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Prahalad Joshi, Jaishankar added.

India’s Mission Kabul, which aims to evacuate stranded Afghan Hindus and Sikhs, began on August 16, a day after the Taliban took over the Afghan capital, is currently in its last phase. As per the latest media updates, an Air Indian Air Force flight will evacuate 46 Afghan Hindus and Sikhs on Monday.

Indian World Forum President Puneet Singh Chandhok said that international forces have escorted the evacuees to the Indian Air Force aircraft. “I can confirm that the stranded Indian Nationals and 46 Afghan Hindus and Sikhs with three Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (holy book) are currently inside the Kabul Airport and are being escorted by International forces to the Indian Air Force aircraft on the ground,” Chandhok said.

As many as 700 people have been evacuated in six Air India and Indian Air Force flights. According to the diplomats posted in New Delhi and Kabul, many global forces, including the United Nations and North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), have been planning on manoeuvres to evacuate stranded people in Afghanistan.

Amid this, the situation in Kabul Airport is heavily chaotic as many gather in flocks to flee the Taliban captured country.

Nearly 400 people returned to India on three different flights on Sunday. Another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals were brought back in a special Air India flight from Dushanbe, a day after they were evacuated to the Tajikistan capital in an IAF aircraft. Additionally, 135 Indians evacuated from Kabul to Doha in the last few days by the US and NATO aircraft were flown back to Delhi on a special flight.

Earlier, the MEA in a statement said that they are committed to bringing back the Indian nationals from the war-ravaged country. The MEA said the main challenge for travel to and from Afghanistan is the operational status of the Kabul airport.
