Delhi Police bust 'Rockstar' & 'Master ji' of online frauds from Jharkhand in Op Cyber Prahar-II

New Delhi:

The Cyber Crime Unit (CyPAD) of Delhi Police Tuesday arrested 14 notorious cyber-frauds from Jharkhand’s infamous Deoghar-Jamtara-Giridh-Jamui region as part of operation Cyber Prahar–II.

Ironically, the two masterminds of the gang—Altaf Ansari and Gulam Ansari— go by the name of ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Master ji’ in the region, respectively. They are accused of several UPI-related payments frauds.

4-5 FRAUDS EVERYDAY

The latest gang to be caught is accused of 36 cases reported on the National Cybercrime Reporting portal from across nine states.

They defrauded a total amount of Rs 1.2 crore in these 36 cases.

They admitted to cheating some 4to 5 people on a daily basis.

CHANGE IN MODUS-OPERANDI

According to the police, the latest generation of cybercriminals, including the ones nabbed, have shifted away from the previous ways of defrauding people. They have also changed the nature of their operations in the recent past.

Police said, the two used a large number of callers operating under them, and kept them in a place from where it was easy to sight any police or suspicious movement to give them enough time to make good their escape.

TECHNOLOGICALLY MORE ADVANCED

Moreover, while cybercriminals in the past, used to randomly call their potential victims and ask for their bank details. These fraudsters induce victims to make payment through UPI by impersonating themselves or using technology in the name of KYC, or blocking bank account or SIM cards, said Anyesh Roy, deputy superintendent of police, Delhi Police Cyber Cell.

They now make temporary websites and send bulk messages containing short URLs.
