The Police Life Saving unit at Polhena beach in Matara managed to rescue a man who was drifting away after being caught in a current on Sunday evening.
He was rescued from about 200 metres away from the beach, police said. The victim is a 35-year-old resident of the Mamadala area.
Police Constables Kaushalya, Manjula and Jayaveera joined the operation to save the victim.
Meanwhile, the police request the public to be on alert when bathing in the seas.
