Apple's iPhone assembler in India under lens after food poisoning of 250 women employees

Sriperumbudur:

Apple’s India supplier Foxconn Technology Group, after the recent mass food-poisoning incident at Sriperumbudur factory’s offsite dormitory, said Wednesday that all employees will continue to be paid while necessary improvements are undertaken before restarting operations.

The group said it was restructuring its local management team in the wake of the incident .

Meanwhile, an Apple spokesperson said Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility had been placed on probation and that it was monitoring the facility closely.

Foxconn also said that it would continue to provide support for staff as they return to work.

“We are also restructuring our local management team and our management systems to ensure we can achieve and maintain the high standards that are needed,” Foxconn said.

Earlier this month, protests rocked the facility where iPhones are assembled in India after over 250 women employees who live in one of the dormitories had suffered food poisoning.

As per the spokespersons of the two companies, some remote dormitories and dining rooms used for employees at a Foxconn plant in their Sriperumbudur facility did not meet required standards.

Reports quoted Apple spokesperson as having said that it had dispatched independent auditors to assess conditions at the dormitories “following recent concerns about food safety and accommodation conditions at Foxconn Sriperumbudur.”
