Tsunami victims remembered on 17th anniversary of Boxing Day Tsunami

Sri Lanka yesterday remembered the thousands of people who lost their lives to the deadly Indian Ocean Tsunami that swept the island in 2004 killing over 35,000 people. A nation-wide two minutes silence from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m was observed.The main Tsunami Commemoration Ceremony was held yesterday morning in front of the Hikkaduwa, Peraliya Tsunami Monument following pandemic health guidelines. Peraliya is the location where the ‘Samudra Devi’ train plying on the coastal line with around 1500 passengers onboard got washed away by the giant waves killing all but a few passengers. People paying tributes at the Akmeemana – Kurunduwatta mass grave yesterday where the bodies of 450 Tsunami victims have been buried, to mark the 17th Tsunami Commemoration under the patronage of the Karapitiya Medical Faculty Judicial Medical Officer U.C.P.
