'Bulli Bai' app row: Mehbooba Mufti slams targeting of Muslim women

New Delhi:

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Sunday alleged that “fringe elements” who were targeting Muslim women online “enjoy the patronage of those in power”.

“Appalling that the criminals behind such derogatory and demeaning actions against Muslim women are given a free run,” the former chief minister said in a tweet.

She further said, “Whether its open calls for genocide of Muslims or targeting Muslim women online it is clear that these fringe elements enjoy the patronage of those in power.”

Mufti was reacting after photographs of at least 100 influential Muslim women were uploaded for auction on an app sparking outrage.

The scribe shared an image of her being sold on the Bulli Bai app as ‘deal of the day’.

The journalist in Twitter said it was “very sad that as a Muslim woman you have to start your new year with this sense of fear and disgust.”

Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw had later tweeted that action has been taken and the GitHub user behind the ‘Bulli Bai’ app had been blocked and “further action” was being coordinated. He also said GitHub has confirmed blocking the user.
