The Ministry of Environment has taken steps to provide a tractor to dispose of garbage collected at the Kataragama Sacred Area and an electric golf cart to transport elderly pilgrims to the Kataragama Sacred Area.
The tractor and the golf cart will be handed over to the Kataragama Sacred Area by His Excellency the President tomorrow (01) morning, said the Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera.
These vehicles are being offered under the Surakimu Ganga Project to prevent the dumping of garbage into the Menik River and to mark the introduction of electric cars under the Government’s proposed air pollution mitigation program in the coming year.
Around 03 million devotees visit the Kataragama Devalaya and Kirivehera Shrines annually. Also, the amount of garbage dumped in the Kataragama Sacred City annually is around 20,000 metric tons. Therefore, several special projects have already been launched under the Surakimu Ganga program for the conservation of the Menik Ganga and the Minister of Environment will hand over these vehicles as one of its projects, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera states.
