EU funding effectively utilized through ACCEND project to uplift lives of rural communities

ADRA and Oxfam through their jointly implemented Assisting Communities in Creating Environmental and Nutritional Development (ACCEND) project which is funded by the European Union (EU) recently handed over two solar energy powered water systems established through the project in the Wilgamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD).

Access to clean water was a long-prevailing need of the Maraka Divisional Hospital and Lediyangala Primary School in the Wilgamuwa DSD. In response to the need, the project allocated LKR 3,182,800 in total to construct two cost-effective and eco-friendly water schemes powered by solar energy in each of the institutions. Each of the systems are powered by 6 solar panels, each having a voltage of 330 watts (W). The systems were officially handed over through a ceremony recently which saw the participation of various project stakeholders such as EU representatives and government officials.

Furthermore, the project recently launched and handed over the Geographic Information System to the Wilgamuwa Divisional Secretariat. The existing water sources in the division were mapped and documented in the system through the project for future reference. The GIS software maintains important records regarding the change and status of water sources within the division and provides a strong scheme for administering these records with reporting tools and transaction support.
