India registers first Omicron death as Covid-19 patient succumbs in Maharashtra

Pune:

A 52-year-old man, who was infected with the

Omicron variant

of the Covid-19 virus, died of a heart attack at Yashwantrao Chavan Hospital in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune, on Tuesday, according to the Public Health Department.

The health department said the patient has a history of

travel

to Nigeria and has had diabetes for the past 13 years. State health officials refrained from labeling it as an ‘Omicron Death’.

“This patient has died of non-Covid-19 causes,” t

he Department of Health, Maharashtra said.

In Maharashtra, 198 new cases of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus came to light on Thursday. The total number of Omicron cases in Maharashtra has reached 450.

According to the health bulletin of the Maharashtra government, 30 of the 198 patients reported by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) are international travelers.
