Four drownings reported, fisherman missing

Four individuals have died due to the drowning at two separate locations on January 1, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

The first incident was reported from Pallegama area in Deniyaya, where a father and a son who visited the Sathmala Ella waterfall with their family drowned.

The 16-year-old son had fallen into the waterfall in an attempt to take a selfie while the 48-year-old father had died in an attempt to save the son, police said. They are residents of the Gintota area. Deniyaya Police are investigating.

The second incident was reported from the Dungalpitiya area where five youths had been swept away by sea waves while sea bathing at the Kepungoda beach. Four of them have been rescued by the police with the support of the area residents and one youth is still missing.

The rescued youths had been admitted to the Negombo Hospital and two of them died there, police said. They are in the ages of 17 and 23 and residents of Pamunugama and Ekala areas.

The other two youths who were hospitalized have been discharged following the treatments.

Police with the support of the residents are conducting operations to recover the body of the 21-year-old missing person.

Police have received a complaint on a fisherman who has gone missing from December 31 at Balapitiya area in Ahungalla. He had left from the Brahmanawatta fisheries harbour by his boat on December 31 but had not returned on the following morning.The Sri Lanka Navy have launched search operations. Ahungalla Police is investigating.
