In a significant development, sources said that the SPG convoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked by the Punjab DGP to take a U-turn and the SPG followed the instructions of the Punjab Police all the time during the security lapse.
Punjab Police and DGP were aware of the fact that a big mistake has been made in the security of PM Modi.
Top sources said that it was the DGP of Punjab who had insisted that the crowd was getting furious and the Punjab police was keeping an eye on the whole situation of security lapses.
Sources said the state DGP had asked the PM’s convoy to return, saying the crowd was aggressive and frantic. Therefore, the SPG (Special Protection Group) which is part of the convoy, followed the instructions of the DGP.
Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry constituted a high-level committee
on Thursday
to probe the serious lapse in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security during his visit to Punjab on Wednesday. The three-member committee will be headed by Secretary (Security) Sudhir Kumar Saxena of the Cabinet Secretariat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy on Wednesday witnessed a major security lapse as he was on his way to Ferozepur to address an election rally and lay the foundation for various development projects worth Rs 42,000 crore, including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to board a helicopter from Bathinda Airport, although he was on his way to Ferozepur by road due to bad weather and last-minute changes.
On the way to Ferozepur, a major lapse in their safety occurred when a group of protesters blocked the highway, causing PM Modi’s convoy to wait for 15-20 minutes. Eventually, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to return to Bathinda Airport and postpone his Ferozepur program.
The Punjab government has been on the backfoot for failing to provide security to the Prime Minister since the security breach.
On arrival at Bathinda, PM Modi told officials at the airport, “Thank your CM, that I returned to Bathinda airport alive.”
The BJP also targeted the Punjab government, calling it a conspiracy to target the Prime Minister and alleged collusion with the protesters.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi addressed a press conference later that day and said that it was wrong to say that PM Modi’s life was in danger.
“I respect the prime minister and am sorry he had to return,” he said.
