Minister Namal Rajapaksa told the House yesterday (8) that the Government will bring those involved in the missing data case of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) to book.
Minister Rajapaksa made this observation in reply to National People’s Power MP Vijitha Herath who claimed that there seems to be a link between the shortage of medicine in the country and the lost data of the NMRA.
“We all know that there is a dollar crisis and a shortage of medicine in government hospitals. One of your own government ministers recently claimed that the country is in an economic crisis because of your poor debt management and corruption. Not everything should be blamed on the pandemic. NMRA data crisis is presently being heard in Courts. We need to question the nature of data lost from the NMRA database. It seems that there is a co-relation between the loss of NMRA data and the medicine shortage. The Health Ministry has not provided proper details on this matter.” MP Vijitha Herath pointed out.
Such a case should never have taken place at the NMRA, Minister Rajapaksa in reply said. “The heads of the NMRA and the relevant companies that maintain the database shoulder bear a major responsibility. If any of them have neglected their duties they should be held responsible and should take legal measures against them. We have also taken steps to recover the lost data at the moment.” the Minister furthered.Indigenous Medicine Promotion State Minister Sisira Jayakody said that the government has a suitably devised plan to locally manufacture medicines that would enable it to decrease prices despite the existing dollar crisis.
