Resumption of on-site academic activities at the Peradeniya University Arts Faculty will be delayed further or will be resumed via online channels as all 19 Heads of Departments have refused to accept a written assurance given by the students’ union regarding the ragging of students.
The heads of the departments have officially informed the Vice Chancellor that the said letter cannot be accepted as it has not clearly indicated that the union would ensure the safety of the students in the anti-ragging group. Instead, the union in the letter has mentioned that it would dedicate to protect the right to education of the students without any racial, religious or caste differences. The students’ union handed over this letter yesterday.
However, the heads of departments said that they expect an assurance from the students’ union regarding that all students will be allowed to visit and use the common premises within the faculty without any disturbance or discrimination and also it would not appear for the students who execute the ragging within the university.
The physical lectures are expected to be commenced once the letter with correct assurance from the students’ union is received, the Arts Faculty Dean Dr.Prabath Ekanayake said.
Accordingly, the final decision of the mode of academic activities, either on-site or online will be taken by the faculty boards at a meeting to be held soon, he said.
