The Meteorology Department predicted yesterday (19) that due to the development of pre-monsoonal conditions, showers or thundershowers could occur over most parts of the country in the next few days.

Commenting on current atmospheric conditions, Duty Meteorologist Sajith Wickramasooriya predicted heavy showers in the Southwest part of the country. Additionally, strong gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour (kmph) and heavy showers above 150 mm are expected in some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Heavy showers above 100 mm are also expected in most parts of Sabaragamuwa Province and the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mannar. The potential for this situation to worsen is high.

Fishermen and seafarers have been advised to be vigilant as the seas off the Southwest coast are expected to be severely turbulent during the heavy showers.

The DMC has requested the public to minimise damage from the ongoing monsoonal rains and to contact emergency number 117 for further assistance if any disaster situation is reported, according to its Assistant Director of Media and Public Relations.
