MPs could be given vehicles – Harsha

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday (15) said MPs could be provided with vehicles from the government fleet after assessing their requests.

He was responding to a query raised by a journalist during a media briefing regarding the controversy surrounding the news that MPs would be given concessionary vehicle permits. It has been reported that 100 MPs have sent a letter to the Speaker requesting vehicle permits.

"Some MPs come from areas such as Moneragala, Jaffna, Badulla and Trincomalee. They say they cannot manage like this. Can they effectively perform their duties with their current salary? Not everyone has money and had jobs prior to their appointments as MPs. How much are MPs paid? What can be done with that salary? If they need a vehicle, it should be provided by the government considering their requests. This is a matter with delicate balance. It is easy to criticise MPs for these things. MPs who steal do not need these concessions," he said.

When queried if it is fair to provide such concessions when the public is heavily burdened, Dr. de Silva said,

"I don't think it is fair at the moment."
