The Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry yesterday (03) declared that plantation companies would have to pay Rs 1,700 as minimum daily wage promised by the government to workers.

The Ministry issued a statement hours after the Court of Appeal refused to grant an interim injunction preventing the implementation of the gazette notification issued by the Minister of Labour, which stipulates a minimum daily wage for plantation workers.

The order was issued when a petition filed by plantation companies seeking a writ order invalidating the relevant gazette notification was taken up for consideration.

However, the court directed that notice be issued to the Minister of Labour Manusha Nanayakkara and other respondents of the petition to appear before the court on 26 June.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced the Rs 1,700 minimum daily wage on May Day at a meeting organised by the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) at Thalawakele.

Plantation companies have declared that they aren't in a position to increase the minimum daily wage to Rs 1,700. However, both Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Nanayakkara and CWC strongman Minister Jeevan Thondaman insist that the new minimum wage has been effective from May Day.
