Every year around 25,000 Lankans die from road accidents

Next year will be the year that ‘Good Governance’ Government implement the law strictly. The traffic rules violation fine of Rs. 25,000 will be implemented. The Health Ministry expects to cut down road accidents by 30 percent, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

According to the Minister, the Rs. 25,000 fine will be strictly implemented while laws on breaking road rules will also be strictly implemented. Various groups will not be allowed to use roads if they violate rules and laws, addressing the launching of the National Policy on ‘Accidents and Emergency care’ at the BMICH, Colombo yesterday he said.

The minister pointed out that annually around 25,000 Sri Lankans die from road accidents and at the moment the Health Ministry is constructing 28 emergency care units at state hospitals countrywide. The Indian Emergency Pre Hospital Care Ambulance Service now in operation in the Western and Southern Provinces will be expanded covering the entire country.

I have already forwarded a proposal to the Economic Committee headed by the Prime Minister suggesting that transport accident victims should be taken to hospitals by air. Such victims should be given required medical care during the golden hour (the first hour from the time of the accident) to save their lives, he added.
