The proposal by Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara to enter into an agreement with a selected French company to construct a high-altitude sports complex in Nuwara Eliya, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
As training at a high altitude increases the tolerance of athletes and is beneficial to their sport, it was proposed that a sports complex is constructed 1,895m above sea level.
The facility will be for the benefit of local athletes but foreign exchange can also be earned by providing such facilities to athletes in neighbouring countries, the government said.
