Northern fishermen warned as cyclone Vardah approaches

Fishermen in the Northern and Eastern areas have been warned not to venture into the seas due to the cyclonic storm VARDAH which originated in the Bay of Bengal.

The fisheries inspection office in Jaffna yesterday issued a warning to fishermen not to go fishing in the next 24 hours as there may be strong winds and the sea would be rough.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department said yesterday that a very severe cyclonic storm “VARDAH” in the Bay of Bengal is now located (approximately 13.4 N, 81.3 E) about 400 km away from the Kankasanturai coast, to the north-east of Sri Lanka and it is likely to move westward towards India.

It was expected to cross North Thamilnadu coast yesterday evening. Showers will occur at several places in the Western, North –Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces. Showers or thunder showers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and Batticaloa district in the evenings, the met department said.
