Over 4,000 suicides annually

Around 4,300 persons in Sri Lanka commit suicide annually, according to the latest statistics of the Sri Lankan government. The most common reasons for suicide is reported to be drunkenness, addiction to harmful drugs, failed love affairs, family and land disputes, stress and incurable diseases.

“Among them, youngsters and married couples show a considerable upward trend in this figure. More counseling sessions have to be held, especially for rural people and students in order to prevent suicides,” said W.E. Jayathilake, Divisional Secretary for Bingiriya.
