Seven percent rise in festive season accidents this year

A total of 493 accident victims were reported to the Accident Ward of the Colombo National Hospital on December 24 and 25 while the hospital recorded 198 admissions, Head of Nurses Pushpa Ramyani Soyza said.

She said among them were 131 road traffic accident victims.

The number of home accident victims reported during the two days were 67. Of this, 34 were victims of violence and 121 victims of 'falling'.

Only one fire cracker accident victim was reported, she said.

Soya said there was a seven percent increase in festive season accident victims this year compared with last year. Soya also added that this year saw a 14 percent rise in road traffic accident victims.

The percentage of victims of violence decreased by 12 percent, she said. Soysa said there was a significant increase is the number of persons getting admitted to hospital due to accidents during the festive season.
